Signs Your Water Heater Is In Need Of Repairs

Round Lake Plumber

One of the most overused appliances in your home is the hot water heater. This appliance is not only running day and night, it needs to be able to kick on and heat water in the event water consumption increases. At any given notice, the water in the house needs to be hot, and that can really take its toll on the hot water heater. Our team of plumbing professionals can help you to easily detect signs that your water heater is in need of repairs.

The first thing you need to listen for is unusual sounds coming from the water heater. The sound will be similar to gravel being rolled around a steel drum. When you hear that type of sound, you should contact your local plumbing professional to do an inspection on your unit. Chances are something has either broken loose or sediment is floating in the water.

Pay close attention to how the water smells in your house. When your water has a sulfur or rotten egg smell to it, chances are the system needs to be flushed or repaired. As sediment accumulates in the water heater tank, it falls to the bottom where it builds up and contaminates the water. The system either needs to be drained to remove all those mineral deposits, or it may be beyond repair and need to be replaced.

When you notice that the water takes significantly longer to get hot, this could be an indication that one or more of the heating elements are not working properly. If the situation is allowed to continue, the element could malfunction and you will lose the ability to heat the water. These heating elements are very sensitive pieces of equipment and should only be accessed by a professional plumber.

Inspect your water heater from time to time and look for leaks. No matter how small the leak may be, it has the potential to turn into a major flood if not treated immediately. Many fittings can simply burst from the extreme water pressure, leaving your home flooded with hundreds of gallons of water.
