Get involved breast cancer awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and with it comes the annual reminder that breast cancer is a very real threat to hundreds of thousands of American women. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that over 230,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year alone.

What can you do to help raise awareness and win the fight against breast cancer? Keep reading to find out:

Get Out and Be Active

be active

There are a wide variety of walks, marches, runs, and marathons held across the United States during the month of October which are designed to raised money and awareness for breast cancer.

Not only are physical events a great opportunity to leave the couch and show your support for women and their families who are battling breast cancer, but collecting donations and donating your time is one of the best ways to contribute to the cause.

Learn About Early Detection and Share Your Knowledge

Experts recommend that women perform breast self-exams on a monthly basis and that as women age they make sure to schedule annual screenings and tests to detect early warning signs of breast cancer.

In addition to educating yourself, make a point to speak to the women in your life about the importance of early detection and annual screenings. Speaking to them and making sure that they know how important their health is to you can make a big difference in encouraging them to go.

Shop for the Cure

If running a marathon isn’t your thing then don’t worry, because there are a variety of products that you can buy, with the proceeds going towards breast cancer awareness and research.

If wearing pink isn’t your thing, don’t worry, because there are a variety of pink products available; from makeup bags, to seat covers, to blankets, and more, pink products are a great way to show support (and make great gifts, too).

Donate Your Locks

Can you imagine losing all your hair? For many women battling breast cancer this is an all-too-real situation, and you can help make their lives easier by growing out your hair and donating it to help make wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

Not only is growing out your hair for a good cause an incredibly selfless thing to do, it also helps women who are battling cancer feel better about themselves, which is the best reward of all.
