How to detect a water leak in your home

While sometimes it may be very hard to locate the source of a water leak inside a Round Lake home, it’s necessary to do so in order to avoid unnecessary water damage as well as higher water bills due to many gallons of water being wasted daily.

However, by taking some time to look around and become a plumbing detective, it’s quite possible to find where leaks are originating from and get them fixed. In most cases, calling a plumber to handle the repairs is the best course of action, since many repairs can be complex and require the expertise of professionals.

Move the Appliances

If a person starts finding water on the kitchen floor, there’s a good chance the leak may be coming from one of the appliances. In these cases, the best way to find the leak is to move all the appliances out from the normal spots and see where if any water continues to accumulate.

In many kitchens, the dishwasher is often the source of a water leak due to a supply line that may be damaged. Other times a refrigerator or freezer may be experiencing a leak, so they should also be checked out. Once it’s determined which appliance is leaking, a service technician should be called to assess the situation and initiate repairs.

Leaking Pipes

In many homes, a water leak can be found by looking underneath cabinets where pipes are located. Most often found in kitchens and bathrooms, leaks can occur at joints and around the P trap under the sink. In some cases, the pipes may be very old and have cracks or corrosion on them, which can also produce leaks.

If water stains, mold, or dampness on the bottom of a cabinet are present, a water leak is the reason why. If this is the case, a plumber can examine the pipes and determine if the existing ones can be repaired or if new ones need to be installed.

Basements and Crawlspaces

Many people fail to notice water leaks in their Round Lake basements or crawlspaces until the damage has already been done. However, by noticing water on the floor or cracks in the walls, damage from the leaks can be limited. A plumber should be called as soon as possible if there are cracks in the foundation or other damage to the home, since further damage could result if the leak is left unprepared.
