Is your water heater the right fit for your home

One: Selecting the Size of Water Heater for a Round Lake, IL Home

When our plumbers are helping customers select the type of water heater needed for a home, its size is one of the first things to consider. The size of a water heater is important for several reasons, including the number of people living in a home and how much space is available in a small utility room.

In a large home where a water heater is located in a basement, the size of the appliance is not as important. Choosing a low capacity water heater for a home where a large family lives leads to never having enough hot water for showers, household cleaning and laundry. Alternatively, installing a huge water heater is not recommended for small families because it can lead to higher energy bills each month.

Two: Choosing an Electric or Natural Gas Water Heater

In the past, most homes had natural gas water heaters because this energy source cost less, but today, that has changed, leading our customers to making changes in the type of water heater installed in a home.

There are pros-and-cons to both of these types of water heaters because during an extended electrical outage our customers are unable to have hot water, and a natural gas water heater continues to work despite outages unless the devices need electricity to turn on mechanisms.

If a natural gas water heater’s pilot light turns off for any reason, then it is sometimes difficult and dangerous to relight. In addition, it is possible for natural gas to buildup around a defective water heater, leading to an explosion or fire.

Three: Tank or Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters are now becoming more popular in the United States because the devices are small enough to add to extra bathrooms or small homes.

These small water heaters are placed near the location where hot water is needed, making it faster for the water to travel to faucets or shower heads in bathrooms. One negative aspect of a tankless water heater is that some of our customers find the item unattractive when it is placed on a wall.

There are also tankless water heaters that are installed underneath sinks inside cabinets, but this reduces our customer’s storage space in a home. Most customers are accustomed to having a tank-style water heater that provides hot water for an entire home.
